Visitor – Fortunate Lukes initiatives will strike once more!
“Change what bothers you”: this is the credo of Socialist Youth (JS). Following this ethical principle has especially earned us a derogatory nickname “Lucky Luka from the Initiative”, wanting to illustrate our penchant for “drawing”. This moniker is well-earned anyway: like Morris’s cowboy, we seek to disarm any political will that could harm the working and middle classes, and to serve justice, social justice.
The People’s Initiative is one of the most powerful institutions in our country. It allows the acts of decision not to be limited only to the will of our federal parliament, to the majority that is (too) often on the wrong track. Faced with the apparent political inaction of the right-wing majority in Bern regarding current social and environmental challenges, the initiative seems to be an indispensable tool for institutional action.
“JS stands for more social justice, equity and action for the benefit of our planet.”
In its desire to contribute to a better world, JS therefore strives to: In 2013, Swiss citizens voted 1:12 on the initiativewith the aim that the highest salary cannot be more than twelve times higher than the lowest salary in the same company.
In 2016, Switzerland spoke our initiative to ban food speculation on the stock marketa ban that would gain its full meaning considering the current pharaonic price of wheat per ton, which would imply the risk of world hunger.
in 2021 the country voted for the 99% initiativewanting to tax capital income (such as dividends) above a certain amount – we proposed 100,000 francs.
Finally, on August 17, 2022, JS launched its own initiative for the future. This requires that the portion of the inheritance exceeding 50 million francs (!) be taxed at 50% in order to finance the ecological transition, and it concerns only 2000 families in Switzerland. It should be noted that the ten richest families in the country generate the equivalent of 92% of Switzerland’s carbon footprint with their investments.
A long struggle
JS therefore stands for more social justice, equality and actions in favor of our planet, on the street or in institutions. And the fight is still far from victory! Parliament is doing nothing concrete to cap insurance premiums, guarantee affordable rents, raise the minimum wage, improve pensions for retirees, ensure effective pay equality between men and women, or articulate a truly social climate policy!
Regardless of our status, whether we are working, studying, learning or retired, there is a need to put aside any blindness and see that the health of our world is indeed dark. So it’s only fitting that we act to improve it, even if it means carrying Lucky Luke’s burden!
