“The College of Reims Champagne-Ardenne will not have distance studying programs”

In an interview with France 3 Champagne-Ardenne on September 22, the president of the University of Reims (URCA) talks about ways to fight rising energy prices without disrupting student studies.

Fall is here and with the temperature dropping, XXL energy bills are expected this year. LThe University of Strasbourg announced on Monday, September 19, an energy reserve plan justified by the sharp rise in gas and electricity prices. And one of the symbolic measures of this plan is the closure of university buildings for two more weeks this winter. Other universities are interested. What about Champagne-Ardenne?

Faced with savings obligations and an obligation to provide good working conditions for students, the university in Reims no longer seems ready to close its doors. Guillaume Gelle, president of the University of Champagne-Ardenne in Reims, presented his projects on September 22 to France 3 Champagne Ardenne.

France 3 Champagne-Ardenne: Are extended closures and distance learning courses planned, as in Strasbourg?

Guillaume Gellé: at the university we have consulted with component directors, directors of our research units and our health and safety committee about working conditions. We have just started to consult with all staff and all students to make proposals.

They will lead to energy savings, and these first exchanges actually show that returning students to remote work is by no means a good solution for several reasons. We are already deporting the issue of energy management, but from a global perspective, the energy that is not consumed at the university will be consumed at home. So this is not the solution and there will be no distance learning.

URCA is 119 buildings, you will have to heat them and light them, so what capacity do you have today?

That’s why we launched this suggestion box. It remains to be seen whether other avenues will reach us, but we think that by really promoting eco-gestures widely among the university community, students and university staff, we can earn the famous 10% we need to reach in the mindfulness plan. the state will ask us for 2024.

There have already been experiments, especially in colleges, that if everyone makes an effort to turn off the light, for example, turning off computer workstations, better control of night lighting, we can achieve these things. performances.

That’s why we first address these solutions, and then there is a way to organize the university, which will allow us to create additional space, that is, for example, if we have classes on Saturdays, it is very far. Let’s look at the situation in the whole university, how can we group our classes in the same building so that we can have longer breaks in other buildings, but students can work in satisfactory conditions.

In summary, the quality of work and comfort of your students will not suffer from the measures you take?

No, that’s not the point at all. We are really working on a vigilance plan that maintains the quality of training and enrollment of students, while at the same time sustaining our research activities, and this is extremely important, this is the second mission of universities.
