All about scholarships in Luxembourg

Whether you are a resident or a cross-border worker, you can get government financial help for your children’s higher education. What are the terms of the grant? How and when to apply?

The State of Luxembourg grants various grants to students, whether they are Luxembourgers, foreigners or children of cross-border workers. This aid can be a study grant, a mobility grant, a student loan, a partial reimbursement of the enrollment fee, etc. What are the award conditions, what are the amounts and how to get these grants?

Who can get financial aid (AideFi) for their studies?

Anyone who is registered as full-time or part-time student in the study cycle ofHigher education :

  • It must be a graduate cycle (1er cycle 2th cycle, research training cycle)
  • The study cycle must provide a diploma, title or degree higher education
  • The study cycle must be part of the higher education system of the country where the title is awarded.

What are the prerequisites for residents?

User based in Luxembourg must:

  • be citizen of Luxembourg or a family member of a Luxembourg citizen residing in Luxembourg; Where
  • be a citizen of another European Union member state (EU) or one of the other signatory states of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) or the Swiss Confederation and:
    • reside in Luxembourg as a worker (including self-employed and pensioners) or be a family member of the aforementioned person; Where
    • acquired the right of permanent residence; Where
  • to have political refugee status in Luxembourg; Where
  • be citizen of a third country or stateless, and:
    • to have resided since then actually in Luxembourg less than 5 years (or you received long-term resident status before filing on 1D request) ; and
    • possess a Luxembourg high school or diploma or a diploma recognized as equivalent to a Luxembourg diploma.

Note: A student who lives in Luxembourg as part of his studies and has less than the minimum social wage is considered a non-resident.

What are the prerequisites for non-residents?

User non-resident must:

  • be worker (including the self-employed), a citizen of Luxembourg or a citizen of the EU or another EEA state or the Swiss Confederation, employed or carrying out his activity in Luxembourg at the time of applying for AideFi for higher education; Where
  • be a beneficiary of an orphan’s pension from Luxembourg, a citizen of Luxembourg or a citizen of the EU or another EEA state or the Swiss Confederation; Where
  • be a working childa citizen of Luxembourg or a citizen of the EU or another EEA country or the Swiss Confederation, contribution to student support and employed or carrying out his activity in Luxembourg at the time of the student’s application for AideFi for higher studies, and provided that that :
    • the parent was affiliated in the Common Center for Social Security (CCSS) for a cumulative period of at least 5 years in a reference period of 10 yearswhich precedes the request; Where
    • the parent was linked to CCSS for a cumulative period of at least 10 years at the time of application ; Where
    • the student is enrolled at least 5 years of cumulative study :
      • in a public or private institution located in Luxembourg providing primary education, secondary education or initial vocational training; Where
      • at “Deutsch-Luxemburgisches Schengen-Lyzeum Perl”; Where
      • on a study program of the University of Luxembourg leading to a diploma, a master’s degree or a doctorate or to a degree in specialist medical studies; Where
      • on a study program leading to a senior technician diploma and accredited by the minister; Where
      • on an accredited study program offered by a foreign higher education institution established in Luxembourg and accredited by the minister; Where
    • the student has legally resident in Luxembourg for a cumulative period of at least 5 years at the time of application.

Notes :

  • the periods during which the person worked for a European or international institution established in Luxembourg and/or received a pension, annuity or unemployment benefit from the state, count towards the minimum required duration;
  • a child who is part of a household in which the parent’s spouse or partner meets the stated conditions is also included;
  • a student who resides in Luxembourg mainly as part of his studies and whose total annual income does not exceed the minimum social wage for unqualified employees is treated as a non-resident student;
  • approved internships are not paid activities, but essentially educational activities and do not qualify for AideFi.

What are the first steps non-residents must take?

For non-resident studentsAideFi is a surrogate help. Before applying, these students must take all the necessary steps in their country of residence to receive financial aid for their studies.

Attention : the student must respect Deadlines introducing requests into your country of residence.

The official answer, positive or negative, for the current academic year must be attached to the AideFi application in Luxembourg or submitted later. Certificates stating administrative reasons for refusal are not accepted. Certificates must relate to the academic year in question and be renewed annually.

In the absence of an official response from the competent authorities of the country of residence of the applicant, AideFi cannot be approved.

    • Regional Council (for training in the health and social sector).

Deadline

The deadline are on absolute respect.

Any request sent outside the established deadlines is Refused.

A request for help should be introduced for each semester even if the student enrolls annually.

The request is submitted:

  • for November 30 for the winter semester: the application form is available from 1er business day the month of August;
  • for April 30 for the summer semester: the application form is available from 1er business day January.

How much is AideFi?

AideFi consists of:

  • different cumulative scholarships ;
  • student loan with interest.

Understand the different stock markets

Scholarship categories are as follows:

  • basic scholarship :
    • awarded to all eligible students;
    • the amount is fixed 1,050 euros per semester;
  • mobility grant :
    • available to eligible students:
      • registered in program higher education outside the national borders of the country of residence the household to which it belongs;
      • who provide proof that they bear the costs of renting accommodation;
    • the amount is fixed 1,286 euros per semester;
  • grant based on social criteria :
    • it is awarded to qualified students whose total taxable income of the household to which they belong is less than or equal to 4.5 times the gross amount of the minimum social wage for unskilled workers (SSM);
    • to them amounts per semester these scholarships are stumbled as follows:
      • income less than 1 times SSM: 1,995 euros;
      • income between 1 and 1.5 times higher than SSM: 1,682 euros;
      • income between 1.5 and 2 times higher than SSM: 1,391 euros;
      • income between 2 and 2.5 times higher than SSM: 1,128 euros;
      • income between 2.5 and 3 times higher than SSM: 866 euros;
      • income between 3 and 3.5 times higher than SSM: 603 euros;
      • income between 3.5 and 4.5 times higher than SSM: 288 euros;
      • When is applied for a student loanthe difference between the maximum amount of 1,995 euros and the amount awarded as a grant is automatically added to the amount of the student loan;
      • when a student loan is requested, and the applicant does not request a grant based on social criteria, the latter is automatically added to the amount of the student loan;
  • family scholarship :
    • available if at the same time one or more children from the same household attend AideFi-eligible higher education;
    • is awarded in one installment in the summer semester. The amount per semester is set at 262 euros per student. Note that it is students who do not apply for the summer semester may request re-evaluation of the winter semester by sending an e-mail to the case manager.

A an increase of 1,000 euros (a 500 euro scholarship and a 500 euro loan) can be awarded to a student who is in serious and exceptional situationand who he is facing extraordinary fees. This increase is approved by the minister based on a reasoned opinion.

The various scholarship categories are cumulative.

How do I request AideFi?

The process is done online through MyGuichet.lu, it is available to everyone.

Online process can be done with or without LuxTrust products (Smartcard, Token, Signing-Stick) or electronic identity card (eID).

Other aids

Part of the registration fee can be refunded to students and a loan can be granted. Various aids are offered by filling out the form.
