BMW: Combination of electric vehicle, fuel cell and combustion engine ‘currently the best approach’

In a conference call on the latest semi-annual report, BMW President Oliver Zipse revealed more about the upcoming “new class” vehicle platform. The cluster architecture planned for 2025 shifts focus from hybrid platforms to a toolkit for e-mobility. However, Zipse does not want to depart from the previously emphasized openness to technology in the next few years.

“The role of hydrogen in individual mobility must be reassessed,” the director said. “In our view, hydrogen is the missing piece of the puzzle that e-mobility can complete as battery electric drives will not prevail. At the end of the year, we will start producing a small series of BMW iX5 Hydrogen. We are already thinking about the potential next generation.”

Until now, BMW has relied on classic combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and increasingly electric cars. To this end, the Bavarians designed their platforms and production lines in such a way that all three types of engines could be implemented flexibly. Unlike competitors like Audi or Mercedes, BMW doesn’t have a set timeline for switching over to all-electric vehicles. The company wants to give customers the option and the ability to respond flexibly to demand in the respective markets at the moment.

“The BMW Group is in a global position. It is strong, financially strong, very strong, innovative and very flexible. This is paying off, especially in the current situation – with its diverse challenges that intertwine. We always focus on the company’s perspective. The BMW Group is also capitalizing on long-term opportunities,” Zipsy said. “We plan strategically in scenarios. We make our decisions based on facts and technical expertise. We don’t follow all trends and tolerate headwinds. This makes the BMW Group resilient.”

The CEO believes that the technically flexible approach is “on the right track”. Customers all over the world are “excited” about the diverse range. In the meantime, they were mainly asking about all-electric models like the BMW iX3 and MINI Cooper SE. Some of the latest BMW iX and i4 electric cars are still being launched and have a large backlog of orders. Recently, the new 7 Series was also produced as an electric car for the first time. Next, the corresponding versions of the X1 small SUV and the 5-series sedan with a purely electric drive from BMW will be presented. Unlike the core brand, MINI and Rolls-Royce are already preparing for the future of a purely electric car.

“We are already producing 15 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle / BEV = Battery Electric Vehicle) models this year, including pre-series.
